Leenane, nestled in the lush Connemara region of Ireland, has long been admired for its breathtaking landscapes and warm community spirit. Yet, until recently, the village lacked a central recreational space where residents and visitors could come together to enjoy nature and foster connections. However, with a vision to transform the heart of Leenane, the Leenane Development Association (LDA) embarked on an ambitious endeavor—to create the Leenane Community Park.
A Vision for Unity and Recreation
The Leenane Community Park initiative was born out of a desire to provide a safe, sustainable, and accessible space for everyone in the village to enjoy. The project found its home on the grounds of the old Kilbride GAA pitch, generously leased to the LDA by trustees who shared the vision of enhancing community life in Leenane.
Milestones Along the Way
The journey towards realizing the Leenane Community Park was marked by significant milestones, each representing a step closer to turning the vision into reality. One such milestone was the attainment of planning permission in February 2019—a crucial first step in the park's development.
With the groundwork laid, attention turned to securing the necessary funding. Community support proved instrumental, with fundraising efforts yielding remarkable results. Generous donations poured in from various sources, including the Connemara Walking Festival, local residents, and even innovative individual initiatives like Neva Goor's "Dip a Day Challenge."
From Dream to Reality
March 2022 marked a significant turning point as the project received its first grant award of €250,000 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2021 by the Department of Rural and Community Development. This injection of funding propelled the project forward, paving the way for the commencement of construction in September 2022.
The tireless efforts of all involved culminated in a joyous occasion on October 21, 2023, as the gates of Leenane Community Park swung open to the public for the first time. Though the official opening was yet to come, the spirit of celebration echoed throughout the village, as local children reveled in the newfound space.
A Testament to Collaboration
The journey of Leenane Community Park stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit. From the initial vision to the final unveiling, the project brought together residents, volunteers, sponsors, and local businesses in a shared endeavor to enrich the fabric of village life.
Embracing the Future
As the park continues to evolve and grow, it promises to be more than just a recreational space—it is a symbol of unity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Leenane. With its walking paths, play areas, and sustainable amenities, the park invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of Connemara while forging lasting connections with one another.
